St. Peter's Basilica, which is called by name in Italian language "Basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano". It is a large church in the Vatican City, in Rome situated in Italy. St. Peter's Basilica is usually called "the greatest church in Christendom". The foundation stone of St Peter’s Cathedral was laid on St Peter’s Day on 29th June 1869.
The basilica was built according to tradition above the burial site of St. Peter which is one of the twelve disciples of Jesus. The first Bishop of Rome, who was put to death in the year 64 CE. To maintain the same tradition, Popes are now buried within the basilica in Rome.
The architecture of Saint Peter's is 452 feet in height, 500 feet in width, and 730 feet in length. It has an interior length of just over 693 feet which is roughly 211 metres. Occupying an area of 2.3 hectares i.e. 5.7 acres or about 50,000 square feet. It has space enough for 60,000 people to reside in it and used to be the largest Christian church in the world, but in 1989 it was exceeded in size by the church in Yamoussoukro, Cote d'Ivoire.
