Solve the following:
A milkman adds 250mL of water to 1 litre of milk. Find the ratio of water to milk.

Hint: Ratio is the division of quantities describing the individual amounts of ingredients in a mixture. Amount of water will be in numerator and milk will be in denominator.
Complete step by step answer:
Let the amount of water added be $W = 250mL$ and the amount of milk be $M = 1L = 1000mL$.
Ratio of water to milk $ = \dfrac{W}{M} = \dfrac{{250}}{{1000}} = \dfrac{1}{4}$.
Generally it is better to keep the answer in fractional form because it gives a better picture of the quantity of the ingredient of mixture. Here, in the mixture, milk takes volume 4 times as that taken by water. Such ratios are very important when we want to produce the same mixture but change the total quantity of mixture. Hope the milk man here is not harming the quality of the milk.
