Many powerful countries around the world, most notably the United States of America, have recently taken on the responsibility of promoting democracy in other countries. They argue that simply promoting democratic values is insufficient. Existing democracies should intervene directly in non-democratic countries to bring democracy to them.

In several situations, powerful powers have attacked non-democratic countries with armed forces. The concept of democracy has developed significantly over time. Direct democracy was the first kind of democracy, in which the people deliberated and decided on laws directly. Representative democracy, such as parliamentary or presidential democracy, is the most popular form of democracy today, in which citizens elect representatives to consider and decide on laws on their behalf.

Note: Democracy contrasts with forms of governance in which power is controlled by a single person, as in autocratic systems such as absolute monarchy, or by a small group of people, as in an oligarchy—oppositions inherited from ancient Greek philosophy.
