Hint: Birth control (contraception) is any method, medicine, or device used to prevent pregnancy. Intrauterine devices are the birth control devices.
Complete Answer:
Intrauterine devices: Intrauterine devices are also called as the intrauterine contraceptive devices or coils. These are the small and T-shaped devices that are used to control birth. These devices are inserted in the uterus of a female in order to prevent pregnancy.
- Intrauterine devices are the long acting reversible birth control measures. Intrauterine devices are more effective and safer than other contraceptive methods.
Example – Copper intrauterine devices.
Types of the intrauterine devices:
There are two types of intrauterine devices-
(I) Non Hormonal intrauterine devices – do not release any amount of hormone.
Example - Copper stimulating intrauterine devices
(II) Hormonal intrauterine devices – that release a small amount of hormones. Example – Progesterone releasing intrauterine devices.
Hormone releasing intrauterine devices:
- Hormone releasing intrauterine devices are also referred to as intrauterine systems in the UK.
- These intrauterine devices work by releasing a small amount of hormone levonorgestrel which is a progestin.
- A medical researcher at the university of Helsinki, Jouri Valter Tapani introduced the first hormone releasing intrauterine device in 1976.
- This device is used for birth control, heavy menstrual flow, etc. This device is placed in the uterus of the females and it lasts three to seven years.
- The effect of this can be reversed means fertility returns quickly after removing this device from the uterus of a female. Examples – Progestasert, LNG-20 (Mirena) .
So, it has been clear from the above discussion that the hormone releasing intrauterine devices and Progestasert and LNG – 20.
Hence, option B is the correct answer for this question.
Note: Contraceptive methods are useful in preventing unwanted preganancies, abortions and also is very important for reproductive health. These are also useful for social health as the population is increasing day by day, so use of these types of contraceptive devices can reduce the number of unintended pregnancies.
