Carbon fixation is the main role of these pathways.
${C_4}$ cycle occurs in both mesophyll and bundle sheath cells. From the name of the scientist who identified this reaction, it is also called a hatch and slack pathway. In this cycle $C{O_2}$ is first bound to a phosphoenolpyruvate in mesophyll cells which results in the formation of four carbon compounds. After that it will be decarboxylated to liberate the $C{O_2}$ so that it can be utilized in the ${C_3}$ pathway. ${C_4}$ plants have better adaptation in the surrounding environment than ${C_3}$ plants. They have processes that allow them to utilize $C{O_2}$ down to much lower levels than ${C_3}$ plants.
Examples of ${C_4}$ plants: Sugarcane, Maize, Sorghum, Amaranth, etc.
In ${C_3}$ plants, Carbon dioxide fixation only occurs at one place. Wheat, Rice and potato have a ${C_3}$ photosynthetic pathway to convert light energy into sugar. Carbon dioxide fixation occurs to obtain a 3-carbon organic intermediate molecule of 3-phosphoglycerate with the help of RuBisCo enzyme.
