In four years (2011-2015) almost 32000 cyber crimes were reported in the country. The IT ACT was passed on 17th October 2000 and was later amended in the year 2007. According to it, a person found guilty of committing cyber-crime can face imprisonment for 3 years and a fine of 5 lakhs. Cyber-crime is registered under three heads of IT act in India, the Indian penal code, and other state-level legislation (SLL).
The cases registered under the IT act include hacking (Section 66(2) IT Act), tampering with computer source documents (section 65 IT Act), loss/damage to computer resources, unauthorized access to protected computer systems, publishing false or fraud digital signatures and breach of privacy and others. The number of cases is still growing continuously and it is a matter of concern. The increase in smartphones and complex applications has resulted in an increase in the number of cyber-crimes. Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh alone accounted for $\dfrac{1}{3}rd$ of the cyber-crime happening in India. Hence, Maharashtra is the first state that developed a separate cyber-crime unit to control digital crimes.
