Some of the major contributions of Mahatma Gandhi in the freedom struggle of India are:
1. Champaran Satyagraha was Gandhi’s first mass movement in which he was successful. He supported the indigo farmers and fought for the. He carried out a satyagraha. The British government accepted the demands of the farmers and Gandhiji was victorious.
2. Khilafat movement: The Khilafat movement was started in order to protest against the injustices taking place in Turkey. This movement was started by the Ali brothers. Under the leadership of Gandhi a mass movement was launched which helped to restore the statute of Caliph of Turkey. In the Delhi session of the Congress he was elected as the President. He gave back the medals from South Africa. With the success of the Khilafat movement Gandhi became a national leader.
3. The Quit India movement: This was one of the most important movements started by Mahatma Gandhi in 1942. This is the movement where he gave his speech of ‘do or die’. Majority of the congress leaders were arrested. With the end of the Second World War, Britain’s position became unstable globally and they were about to lose the colonial territories. The British government promised to start the process of complete independence to India. Gandhi wanted the release of the prisoners. India became free on 15th August 1947.
