Hint: Rain is the precipitation that comes down to the earth in liquid form. Rainwater also helps in filling most of the groundwater and plants help preserve water. Rainwater flows down the bare mountains and can cause flooding of low lying areas when trees on hillsides are cut.
Complete answer:
There are three types of rainfall on the basis of mechanism: orographic rainfall, convectional rainfall, and cyclonic rainfall. For the survival of plants and animals, rainfall is very important. It helps in bringing fresh water to the surface of the earth. But just like everything is good in a limit, rainfall also has its limits. If it is less than water scarcity and drought are likely to occur. On the other hand, if it is more, then the floods can also take place. And both these conditions cause a lot of damage to life and property.
India has a ‘monsoon’ type climate. This type of climate is found mainly in the south and the southeast regions of Asia. But there are perceptible regional variations in climatic conditions within the country despite an overall unity in the general pattern. There are various differences not only in the types and forms of precipitation but also in the seasonal distribution and its amount. While in the upper parts of the Himalayas, precipitation is mostly in the form of snowfall, it rains over the rest of the country. The annual precipitation varies from less than 10 cm in western Rajasthan and Ladakh to over 400 cm in Meghalaya. From June to September, most parts of the country get rainfall. But during October and November, some parts like the Tamil Nadu coast get a large part of its rain.
Note: Seasonal contrasts are more in the interior of the country than in the coastal areas. In the Northern Plains, there is a decrease in rainfall generally from east to west. A variety in the lives of people has occurred due to these variations in terms of the clothes they wear, the food they eat, and also the kind of houses they live in.
