Over the past 50 years, the average global temperature has increased at the fastest rate in recorded history. And the trend is accelerating. After the year 2000, we have witnessed the hottest 16 years in the past 134 years. And this is scary!!
Cause of global warming: it occurs when the level of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases which are responsible for heat-trapping gets collected in the atmosphere and absorbs solar radiation that has bounced back from earth’s surface.
Ideally, these radiations must have escaped to space but due to the presence of these gases, it gets trapped and makes earth hotter.
The level of greenhouse gases is increasing primarily due to human activities: burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, industrialisation and some natural factors such as volcanic eruptions, forest fire etc.
Some of the examples of greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, methane, chlorofluorocarbons, ozone, nitrogen dioxide and water vapours.
