We know that the colloidal solution can be prepared from various methods. Mainly, we can prepare colloidal solution by condensation method and dispersion method. Peptization is a process for the preparation of colloidal solution which is a dispersion method.
By adding suitable electrolyte, the method of converting a precipitate into a colloidal solution is called peptization. The electrolyte used for the peptization is called peptising agent which is a stabilising agent. The addition of a small amount of dilute hydrochloric acid to stannic oxide precipitate gives a stable sol of stannic oxide is an example for the peptization. The main reason for the process of peptization is the adsorption of the ions of the electrolyte by the particles of the precipitate. Sugar gem gelatine and electrolyte are also an important peptising agent. Peptization is also known as deflocculation and has a very important role in nanoscience.

In nanoparticle chemistry, peptization can be used for the preparation of nanoparticles to make a large grouping of particles split into many primary particles.
