Sesamum is a genus of 20 species of flowering plants belonging to the family Pedaliaceae which are perennial edible seeds. They have been growing since 3000 years ago and are native to sub-Saharan Africa. The best well known member of his genus is Sesame which is the oldest oilseed crop which is grown in latitude of 1200 metres in India and worldwide 1600 metres. They grow in high temperatures ranging from 25 to 35 degree Celsius. They are adopted to many soil types and are best when grown in medium textured fertile soil and a neutral pH level.

The length of the plant ranges from 50 to 100 centimeters and varies in color such as white, blue or purple containing oil content. The seeds are small ranging from about 3 to 4 mm long and 2 mm wide and 1 mm thick. They can be stored in polybags, tin bins, wooden receptacles or earthen pots and maintained for about one year.

In India the major states which produce approximately 85% of sesame are Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Gujarat, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Note: Japan is regarded as the largest importer in the World. It is also considered as a cash crop.
According to the 2018 report 6 million tonnes of sesame were produced and the major producers were Sudan, Myanmar and India.
