Some plant movement occurs due to some external stimuli like,
Tropism which is a biological phenomenon that refers to the growth or turning movement in biological organisms generally plants in response to the external environmental stimulus and these movements are the growth movement termed tropic movement. Depending upon the stimuli they are:
Phototropism: When a plant is oriented in presence of light is termed phototropism. Either towards the source of light i.e. positive phototropism or away from the source of the light i.e. negative phototropism.
Geotropism: Plant growth movement which is induced by the stimuli of gravity termed geotropism, i.e. primary roots always grow in the direction of gravity showing positive geotropism while main shoots grow in the opposite direction from the gravity showing negative geotropism.
Hydrotropism: The growth movement concerning water stimulus is known as hydrotropism. Roots show positive hydrotropism as they turn towards the source of the water.
Chemotropism: Movement caused due to some chemical stimulus is termed as chemotropism. Like the movement of the pollen tube through style towards the ovary is concerned with the chemical stimulus it receives.
So, as we have discussed above we can see these types of movements in the plants.
Note: Movement in plants is essential as it allows the plant to adjust according to the direction of its growth when there are sudden environmental changes. These movements concerning various stimuli serve as a protective measure also.
