In the previous classes, we have come across the chapters of chemistry that deals with the basic concept of the periodic table where the atoms are arranged in it accordingly and also several properties relating to it.
We shall see in detail about this modern periodic table and come to the required answer.
- Modern periodic table has four blocks in which a set of elements are placed. They are s-block, p – block, d – block and f – block elements based on their valence electrons.
- The elements in the periodic table are arranged mainly based on their atomic number in the increasing order.
- The modern periodic table is divided into groups and periods where the elements are grouped based on their atomic number and some of their properties.
- The arrangement of elements is also according to their recurring chemical properties. The rows in the periodic table are called as period and the columns are called as the groups.
- Generally, within one period, the elements to the left are metals and to the right are the non metals with the elements having similar chemical behaviours that are placed in the same column.

Note: Note that some of the groups in the periodic table have attained their names which are accepted and also are having the accepted numbers. For example, group 17 elements are called as the halogens, group 18 elements are called as the noble gases.
