Magadha flourished under its king Bimbisara. Bimbisara was succeeded by his son Ajastashatru, who shifted the capital of Magadha from Giriviraj to Patliputra. Later on Patliputra remained the capital city of the Mauryan kingdom.
The capital of Magadha Kingdom under king Bimbisara was Giriviraj ( modern Rajgir). Rajgir was earlier the capital of the Magadha kingdom. The city was surrounded by rings of mountains and was therefore difficult to lay siege to.
Vaishali was the capital city of Vajji mahasangam where the licchavi clan was predominant. King Bimbisara was in matrimonial alliance with Vajji Mahasanga.
Varanasi was the capital city of the Kingdom Kashi(Kosala). When ajatashatru paticide, Prasenajit son of king kosala declared war on Magadha king and lost. Ajastashatru then gained complete control of kashi.
