- The ear is an organ in mammals that are used for hearing and maintaining body balance. The ear is an external organ that has 3 parts .i.e an outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear. Inside the ear is an eardrum. The ear is attached to several nerves that provide information of sound to the brain. The ear is a part of the auditory system.
- The outer ear consists of Pinna and an ear canal. Inside the ear canal, there is a tympanic membrane which is commonly known as Ear Drum, which gets vibrated when air(sound) hits it. After the tympanic membrane, there are auditory ossicles that consist of 3 small bones called the malleus, incus, and stapes also called Hammer, Anvil, and stirrup.
- These 3 bones are part of the middle ear. Now coming to the inner ear, it has cochlea. It has a spiral organ called Corti that acts as receptor organs for hearing. Connecting to the middle is a structure called the Eustachian tube that connects the middle ear to the nasopharynx.
- An opening is a Eustachian tube that takes place only during yawning, swallowing, and chewing. It plays a role in the maintenance of air pressure of the ear and body.
Balancing our body is also done with the help of the ear and cochlea play a major role in body balancing.
