Hint: Recombinant DNA technology (genetic engineering) is the set of techniques that enable the DNA from different sources to be identified, isolated, and recombined. Hence, new characteristics can be introduced into an organism. Recombinant DNA technology is the process in which genetic material from one organism is artificially introduced into the genome of another organism. And that credits will be received by Paul Berg, Herbert W Boyer, and Stanley N Cohen although many other scientists made important contributions to the new technology as well.
Complete answer: Process of recombinant DNA technology: There are many diverse and complex techniques involved in gene manipulation. The basic principles of recombinant DNA technology are simple, and involving the following stages
Fragments a generated DNA and selection of the desired piece of DNA. (e.g. s human gene)
Positioning of the selected DNA into a cloning vector (e.g. a plasmid) to create a Chimeric DNA. (The word Chimera means monster in Greek mythology that has a lion’s head, a goat’s body, and a serpent tail. This thing is comparable to Narasimha in Indian mythology).
Insertion of the recombinant vectors into host cells. Example: Bacteria.
Selection and multiplication of clones containing the recombinant molecules.
Articulation of a gene to produce the desired product.
Note:
Genetic engineering basically involves the manipulation of genetic material(DNA) to get the desired goal in a predetermined way. The other terms which are commonly used to describe genetic engineering they are
Gene manipulation
Recombinant DNA technology
Gene cloning
Genetic modification
New genetics.
Recombinant DNA technology with special reference to the following aspects is described as
Molecular tools of genetic engineering.
Host cells are the factories of cloning.
Vectors the cloning vehicles.
Methods of gene transfer.
Gene cloning strategies.
