Hint: The Battle of Purandar took place between Jai Singh who was the general of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb had sent Dilir Khan and Jai Singh to capture Shivaji’s fort in Purandar.
Complete answer: The Battle of Purandar took place in 1665. It was held between Mughal commander Jai Singh and Maratha emperor Shivaji. After the Maratha General Murarbaji was killed by the Mughal forces, Shivaji surrendered. He gave up 23 of his fortresses. After which most of the other fortresses were captured by the Mughals. After the defeat of the Marathas, the Treaty of Purandar was signed on 11th June 1665 between Jai Singh who was the Mughal commander under Aurangzeb and Shivaji. Shivaji was made to sign this after Jai Singh took over the forts of Purandar. The main provisions of the treaty were:
1. Shivaji was allowed to keep 12 forts. He was also allowed an area of income of 1 lakh huns.
2.Shivaji had to help and cooperate with the Mughals wherever it was required.
3. Shambhaji, the son of Shivaji was given a force of 5000 under the Mughals.
4.In order to reclaim the fort in the Konkan area, Shivaji had to pay a sum of 40 lakh rupees to the Mughals.
Therefore, option D is correct.
Note: Shivaji again attacked the Purandar fort that he had lost to the Mughals. The Mughals were taken aback by the attack. Shivaji’s most trusted general Tanaji, under whom the attack was launched, was killed in the battle. To avenge the death of their leaders the Maratha soldiers fought under Tanaji’s brother and won the battle. The fort was named as Sinhgadh after Tanaji who was known as the ‘lion’ for his valour.
