Hint: Coke is a substance that contains mainly carbon content and due to mainly carbon content it is a hard substance, and many other characteristics. Since it is a carbon compound it can be used as fuel.
Complete step by step answer:
Coke is a substance that contains mainly carbon atoms and due to mainly carbon content it has many characteristics that are listed below:
(i)- Due to its high carbon content it is a very hard and tough substance.
(ii)- It has many pores due to which it is porous in nature.
(iii)- Since coke is a hard rock that is black in colour because of the presence of carbon.
(iv)- It is one of those substances that have an almost pure form of carbon.
(v)- When the coke is burnt there will either be no smoke or very little smoke.
Since their coke contains carbon it is used in many ways. These are listed below:
(i)- In blacksmithing, the fuel that is mostly used is coke, and it is also used as fuel in many processes.
(ii)- Iron is obtained by smelting the iron ore in a blast furnace in which a reducing agent is used and for this purpose, coke is used as a reducing agent.
(iii)- In the 1960s and 1970s the coke was mainly used for house heating in Australia.
(iv)- When the coke is burnt there will either be no smoke or very little smoke so it can be used as fuel in households also.
(v)- Coke is used for the production of many types of gases like Syngas and Producer gas.
Note: Syngas is also known as water gas, which is a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, whereas Producer gas is also known as wood gas, which is a mixture of carbon monoxide, nitrogen, and hydrogen.
