Rani Lakshmibai was born in the year 1828 on 19th November in Varanasi in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The original name of Lakshmibai was Manikarnika Tambe and nicknamed Manu by her parents. Her father named Moropant Tambe and mother Bhagirathi Sapre belonged to the state of Maharashtra. At the age of four she lost her mother and grew up as an independent child as compared to others. The contributions made by Lakshmibai are of great respect which became an important name in the struggle of freedom against Britishers.
In the year 1842, Rani was married to Maharaja of Jhansi Raja Gangadhar Rao after which she was named Lakshmibai. In 1851 she gave birth to a baby boy named Damodar Rao but at the age of four he died. Then, the couple adopted the son Gangadhar’s cousin, i.e. Anand Rao and renamed him Damodar Rao. In the year 1853, Maharaja of Jhansi died which gave the opportunity to the British Governor General Lord Dalhousie to apply the rule of ‘Doctrine Of Lapse’, According to this principle if any Indian ruler died without a male child to act as the legal heir then the entire kingdom would lapse which would be conquered by the British empire. In this situation, Jhansi demanded the British company to accept his adopted son as the legal heir to which it was refused by the company. So, this was the demand made by the Lakshmibai which was refused by the British.
Note
The successor of Lakshmibai was British Raj.
The burial place of Rani is Phool Bagh, Gwalior in the state of Madhya Pradesh.
In her memory a statue has been built in Solapur, Maharashtra on a horse with his son tied on her back.
