Complete answer:
Loamy soil, also known as loam, is one of the three basic kinds of soil. It is a fertile, rich soil which contains a relatively equal mixture of silt and sand. It also contains a slightly lesser amount of clay. It is commonly accepted as the most arable kind of soil since most plants can be grown in it.
Listed below are some of the main characteristics of this kind of soil:-
1. Loamy soil has a relatively equal amount of big and small particles in it. Compared to it, sandy soil has mostly large granules while clayey soil has mostly very fine granules. This causes loamy soil to be airy without being too dry.
2. Loamy soil has moderate porosity. Compared to it, sandy soil is highly porous while clayey soil has very low porosity. This makes it ideal for growing most crops as it does retain too much water, nor does it dry out too early.
3. Loamy soil is preferred for growing most kinds of crops. In contrast, sandy soil is better for plants that need less water, and clayey soil is ideal for plants that need high water content.
Additional information:- The other types of soil are sandy soil and clayey soil. Sandy soil is made up of bigger granules and sometimes includes small pebbles. Due to its structure it is very porous and loses moisture very easily. Clayey soil has very fine soil particles and is tightly packed with very little space between. This causes it to be the least porous kind of soil and it is very sticky and heavy.
Note:Loamy soil is also generally found to have the best humus content.
A mixture of sand, clay and silt is the same as loam. A variety of this soil is also used in making bricks.
Loam mixed with clay and some straw is used to plaster walls, and make molds.
