During the process of respiration, the cells take in or utilize oxygen and give out Carbon dioxide along with ATP molecules which are the energy currency of the cells. The process of cellular respiration takes place in cytoplasm and mitochondria. The first phase of cellular respiration takes place in the cytoplasm and is known as Glycolysis. During this process the glucose molecules in the cells get converted into Pyruvic acid with the release of ATP molecules which can be later utilized in releasing energy. This process does not require oxygen and is the only step involved in anaerobic respiration.
For aerobic respiration, the pyruvic acid produced enters into the mitochondria, where it enters into a pathway called Kreb’s cycle or TCA cycle and produces more ATP molecules along with water and Carbon Dioxide as by-products. The energy output by this process is less compared to aerobic respiration. Anaerobic respiration also takes place in certain eukaryotic cells under unfavourable conditions, such as when there is a shortage of Oxygen.
