Blood is a red coloured fluid that consists of various organelles that work as independent units and carry out various metabolic processes. Following is a list of organelles of blood:
RBCs: It is an acronym for Red Blood Cells. They are also called Erythrocytes. They impart red colour to the blood due to the presence of compounds called haemoglobin on their surface. They carry oxygen from lungs to various organs of the body and Carbon dioxide from various organs of the body to the lungs. On an average a healthy body should have 4.7 - 6.1 million cells per micrometer.
WBCs: It is an acronym for White Blood Cells. They are also called leukocytes. They are responsible for eradicating harmful foreign bodies from the body. They engulf such foreign bodies and destroy them. These are amoeboid structures. On an average a healthy body should have 4500 - 11000 cells per microliter.
Platelets: It is a common name for thrombocytes. They are responsible for inducing clotting of blood at wounded areas. These are very important for managing wounds. They are irregular bodies. On an average a healthy body should have 450000 - 150000 cells per microliter.
Plasma: It is not one of cell organelles but is a very important part of blood as it constitutes fluidity of the blood. It is a yellow coloured fluid.
