Hint: The veins are present on the legs, ankles, and feet because these are body parts that are far from the heart. The veins are valves that help keep the blood flowing in the right direction. Valves are like doors that close when the blood has passed through them. So that blood keeps flowing and makes sure that it does not flow backward.
Complete answer:
The blue color of veins are not a sign of good health, it may be due to the presence of certain vein disease. When you are standing up or sitting down the gravity pulls blood down into your legs, and in this condition, veins have to work extra to get that blood back to the heart. Some veins are not able to wear it out.
- The veins that are present on the skin, get swells and these are known as varicose veins. The varicose veins are caused due to the loss of elasticity in the walls of the veins. Due to this the veins stretch out and slow down the movement of blood back to the heart. Therefore this leads to an increase in the blood pressure and causes the veins to swell present below the skin. It looks twisted and purple or blue in color and looks like that they are sitting on top of the skin which means they are raised. They are painful especially when a person sits or stands still for a long time. A person with varicose veins has achy legs and even feels heavy.
Additional information:
The signs of varicose veins include-
During non-painful conditions
1) Veins become dark purple or blue in colors.
2) Veins appear as twisted and bulging.
During painful conditions
1) Ache in the legs or heavy feeling in the legs.
2) Muscles cramping and swelling in the lower legs.
3) Pain gets worse after sitting or standing for a long time.
4) Itching around veins.
5) Around a varicose vein discoloration of the skin occurs.
Note:
The blueness in our veins is sometimes an optic illusion as the blood is red-colored but due to the scattering of light on our skin the colors penetrate with different wavelengths leading to the reflection of blue color in our eye. Thus our veins look blue in color.
