Hint: The Treaty of Purandar was signed on June 11, 1665, between Rajput Sardar Jai Singh who was the commander of the Mughal Empire and Maratha ruler Shivaji when Jai Singh besieged the Purandar fort.
Complete answer: With a view of stopping the increasing influence of Maratha ruler Shivaji, Aurangzeb sent Jai Singh the commander of the Mughal empire to Pune. He started gathering forces against Shivaji. Jai Singh suggested starting a naval fight against Shivaji.
He also made a plan to capture the forts under Shivaji and was successful in capturing Purandar fort. Maharaja tried to resist the forces but was unable to do so and then began talks for a treaty for negotiations. Hence, the Treaty of Purandar was signed between the two. According to the provisions of the treaty Shivaji gave twenty-three of his forts and an annual remuneration of four lakh huns. He also agreed to help the Mughals to launch a campaign against Adilshahi.
In an attempt to further increase the Mughal territorial reach Jai Singh launched a campaign against AdilShahi the ruler of Bijapur, but the Mughal - Maratha expedition failed and they were unable to capture Bijapur and could not defeat AdilShahi. Shivaji who was appointed to capture the fort of Panhala was also unsuccessful in doing so. Aurangzeb and Jai Singh agreed that Shivaji should be kept away from Deccan politics and was invited to Agra by Aurangzeb where he was not treated well, upset by the behaviour, he decided to restore his empire and was also successful in doing so.
Thus, option A is the correct answer.
Note: Five years after the treaty was signed, Shivaji was able to recapture all the besieged forts in a short time span of four months in a military uprising.
