Hint: In order to solve this question we need to understand electromotive force and how current flows from the positive terminal of the cell to the negative terminal. So when a battery is given a positive side and a negative side then a potential difference is created inside battery and we know force is defined as negative gradient of potential energy, so this force is known as electromotive force and due to this force electrons feel a force in opposite direction so in this way current flows inside battery.

Battery is considered to be a collection of cells and a cell can be regarded as a device across which potential difference is created so that electrons are bound to flow from negative to positive terminal and hence current flows.
For the arrangement of cell to form battery, we have to arrange in such a manner such that there must not be discontinuity in current flow so for this purpose we place cells side by side and connect one cell negative terminal to second cell positive terminal which in turn connect with negative terminal of next cell and in this way we connect cells to form battery.
Note: It should be remembered that if cells are arranged in series then to total internal resistance of the battery increases whereas if we try to connect cells in parallel then the total internal resistance developed in opposition of electric current would be less than individual resistance and because of that there could be large current flow and that’s why we avoid connecting the cells in parallel to form a battery.
