The Paper Pattern of CBSE Class 10 English Language and Literature-2011

The paper is divided into 4 sections. There is Section A (15 marks), B (15 marks), C (15 marks), and D (35 marks). The highest you can score is 80 marks. The time provided for writing down the complete paper is 3 hours. The marks structure is given in the table below.

Section A Contains 3 Major Questions, and Each Question Carries 5 Marks. 

Question 1 consists of a paragraph that you will have to read. Answer the given MCQs from the paragraph. Question 2 is a poem, you will have to read it and answer the MCQs given below. Question 3 is a paragraph again but you will have to answer by filling in the blanks.

Section B Contains 3 Questions, Each Question Carries 5 Marks.

In Question 4, you will have to write a letter. You are given two options. You have to write either a formal letter or an informal letter.  Question 5 is on Article writing, you will again be given two topics and you will have to write on one of them. In Question 6 you will have to choose between report writing and dialogue writing. 


Section C Contains 5 Questions, Each Question Carries 3 Marks. 

All the questions in this section are related to your grammatical understanding. The questions mostly have an incomplete paragraph containing blanks, you will have to choose the right answers from the options given. 


Section D Contains 6 Questions, All the Questions Carry Different Marks. 

The questions of this section are from the literature given in your textbook. There are also two extracts given from which you will have to answer.

1. How can I score well in the English paper for class 10 CBSE exams?

To score well in an English language and literature exam, you must be clear with the basics of the language. You must practice sample papers to gain confidence and get familiarized with the paper style. Go through the sample papers offered by Vedantu. Section D can be easily solved if you are familiar with the NCERT Class 10 textbook. Go through all the poems and short stories given in the book. Memorize the titles, author names, and poet names. Sometimes an author’s name alone can be asked in an MCQ, to be clear about who wrote which story or poem. Know the answers to the questions given after every chapter. Carefully answer Section D, write the exact answer to the question, do not write something that it’s asked.

4. How do I write a good report in English for Class 10 CBSE exams?

When you are writing a report, make sure you have a clear subject. Never forget to mention your name and city. Be very particular about the news you are trying to convey. Do not drift to another irrelevant subject. Avoid unnecessary bias in your statements. Write clear statements on both the parties involved. Try to write factual data and refrain from writing in an emotional tone. Have a clear sequence of information. First write the introduction, followed by the problem, causes of the problem and lastly suggestions. If relevant, add your signature at the left corner at last.

 5. How important is SECTION A in the CBSE Class 10 English question paper?

Section A is worth 15 marks and is the easiest to solve. Section A is about answering the questions given from the paragraphs and poems from the paper itself. The fact that you can easily score in this section if your fundamentals are clear, makes the section the most important one to score well. Have a good understanding of how to solve complex MCQs, synonyms, and antonyms to get the section right. Remember to not be in a hurry, as this is the easiest section in terms of grammar.
