Sing the Pat A Cake Lyrics

Cake marked with letter ‘B’

Cake Marked with Letter ‘B’

Pat-A-Cake

Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake baker’s man

Bake me a cake as fast as you can

Prick it and pat it and mark it with a “b”

And put it in the oven for Billy and me

Make it with chocolate, make it with cream

Make it the prettiest you’ve ever seen

Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake baker’s man

Bake me a cake as fast as you can

Please

Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake baker’s man

Bake me a cake as fast as you can

Mix it and stir it and bake it just right

Good from the first ’til the very last bite

Write his name with lots of care

And make pretty flowers here and there

Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake baker’s man

Bake me a cake as fast as you can

Prick it and price it and mark it with a “b”

And put it in the oven for Billy and me

And put it in the oven for Billy and me

And put it in the oven for Billy and me

A Blurred Background of This Song – Pat A Cake

  • Did you know, the earliest recorded version of Pat a Cake was in the year 1698! The rhyme then appeared in Thomas D’Urfey’s play which was known as ‘The Campaigners from 1698’. In this play, a nurse says to her charges to bake her a cake – prick it and throw it in the oven is directed to a baker’s man by the Nurse.

  • This poem next made its entry in 1765 in ‘Mother Goose’s Melody’ in yet another form:

Patty Cake, Patty Cake,

Baker's Man;

That I will Master,

As fast as I can;

Pat it and prick it,

And mark it with a T,

And there will be enough for Tommy and me.

  • Another earliest version of this poem was in James Hook’s music "A Christmas Box".
