In this chapter, we are going to learn about integers. The study of Integers is one of the most important concepts as Integers are the number that is most commonly part of our day-to-day life.

Class 7 Mathematics Chapter 1 Solutions

Number Line

The number is the line on which real numbers are represented. The integers are marked positions on the number line and they can be easily represented on the number line.

The midpoint of the number line is marked as 0.

It contains negative numbers on its left side. While it contains positive numbers on its other side.

The range of the number line is from negative infinity to positive infinity. The integer on the right side of the number line is always greater than the integer on the left side.

For example 8 > 7, 0 > -1, -1 > -2, etc.

There is no smallest integer as the number line extends to infinity on the negative side.

Algebraic Operations

  • Addition

The sum of two integers always results in the integer. Also, negative integers add up to give negative integers, whereas positive integers add up to give positive integers.

  • Subtraction

The difference between two integers always results in the integer. Subtraction is the opposite of addition and so we can write a + b as a + (-b).

  • Multiplication

The product of two integers is always an integer. The product of two negative integers and two positive numbers is always positive. Whereas, the product of one negative and one positive integer always results in a negative integer.

  • Divide

The quotient of two integers on dividing doesn't need to be an integer. The quotient of two negative integers and two positive numbers is always positive. Whereas, the quotient of one negative and one positive integer always results in a negative integer.

When We

  1. Add a positive number in an integer and we move on the right side of the number line.

  2. Add a negative number in an integer and we move to the left side of the number line.

  3. Subtract a positive number from an integer then we move on the left side of the number line.

  4. Subtract a negative number from an integer then we move the right side on the number line.

Properties of Integers

  1. After Multiplying with 0 an integer becomes 0.

0*a = 0

  1. The product of any integer with 1 will be its value.

a*1= a

Properties of Integers

Addition

Subtraction

Multiplication

Division

Closure properties (for two integers)

a+ b is an integer; integers are closed over addition.

a-b is an integer; integers are closed over subtraction

a*b is an integer; integers are closed over multiplication

Integers are  not closed over Division

Commutative property ( for two integers)

a+b = b+ a ;

The addition is commutative for integers.

a-b = b- a ;

Subtraction is commutative for integers.

a*b = b* a ;

The addition is commutative for integers.

The division is not commutative

Associative Property ( for three integers )

a+(b+c) = (a+b) + c ;

Follow associative Property for addition

Subtraction is not associative

a*(b*c) = (a*b) * c ;

Follow associative Property for multiplication

The division is not associative

Distributive Property of Multiplication over Addition

Distributive Property of Multiplication over Subtraction

For any three integers a,b and c ;

 a*( b+c) = a*b + a*c

For any three integers a,b and c ;

 a*( b+c) = a*b + a*c
