Countable Noun

  • Countable nouns are the names of people and things that can be counted.

  • Countable nouns are those before which we can put a number on.

  • Concrete nouns such as river, person, country, doctor, chair and phone, pen, and book are mainly countable nouns.

  • They can be used in both the singular and the plural form.

  • The articles “a”, “an”, or a number can be used with countable nouns in the singular form.

  • For example, a book.

  • Five chairs.

  • A table.

  • Seven forks.

  • An umbrella.

  • The article, ‘a’ is used before words with the beginning letter as a consonant or consonant sound.

  • For example, a bat.

  • A ball.

  • A robot.

  • A spoon.

Abstract Noun

  • An abstract noun is the name of those things that are not seen or touched but could only be thought or felt.

  • Death.

  • Hatred.

  • Happiness.

  • Love.

  • Poverty is a main concern in the country.

  • Beauty is in a person’s character.

  • The child was filled with hatred since his parents didn’t get any gifts.

  • She was filled with happiness after the trip.

  • The parents had a lot of love for their kids.


Material Noun

  • The material noun is the name of a thing out of which things are made. 

  • For example, aluminium, gold, silver, iron, clay, and wood.

  • The chairs of made of wood.

  • The utensil is made of aluminium.

  • The bat is made of willow.

  • The bowl is made of silver.

  • The ring is made of diamond.

  • The bullet or made of metal.

  • The pots are made of clay.

  • The bangles are made of white gold.

  • The ankle bracelet is made of silver.

  • The bottle is made up of copper.

  • The cupboard is made up of teak wood.

  • The dress is made of silk.

  • The house is made up of bricks.


Proper Noun

  • Proper names are designations assigned for people, things, places, etc.

  • These are known as naming words.

  • For example, the Taj Mahal is a beautiful monument.

  • Sam works out regularly.

  • Randy danced all night.


Common Noun

  • These are nouns that describe a type of person, place or concept.

  • For example, India has a lot of monuments.

  • All the countries are participating in the tournament

  • The girls were present in the auditorium on time.

  • The boys attended the practice regularly.


Collective Noun

  • These refer to the name of the collection of things that are nouns.

  • For example, the herd of cattle were grazing the field.

  • The pack of wolves were howling all night.

  • The flock of birds were drinking water from the fountain.

  • The school of fishes were swimming in the pool.
