The first chapter in Algebra is Number systems in the R.D Sharma Class IX textbook. In this chapter, students learn that the Number system defines a set of values used to represent quantity. Every quantity can be represented in binary, octal, decimal, duodecimal, and hexadecimal forms. Students also learn that the decimal number system is the most popular and common number system which we use in our daily life. This chapter also teaches that there are numbers in the decimal system (i.e., 0 to 9). In the case of the binary number system, there are two different numbers and 2 is the base for the binary number system. Students are also taught that the base of the number system is also known as radix. The notation for this base is ( r ). The base helps us determine how many numbers are there in the number system. In the binary number system, the numbers are known as Bits. 

On the other hand, in the case of the Octal number system, there are 8 distinct digits (i.e., from 0 to 7). Hence, the base is 8. Students also learn that the duodecimal number system consists of 12 distinct numbers (i.e., from 0 to 9 ), but the rest of the numbers are represented by alphabets (i.e., 10=A, 11=B, 12=C, 13=D, 14=E, 15=F). Since we have only 12 distinct numbers from 0 to 11, it will be represented as (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B). For the hexadecimal number system, the same process is repeated. The numbers represented for the hexadecimal number system are 16 distinct numbers (i.e., 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B, C, D, E, F).
