Quadratic Equations- Mathematics, Chapter 8 (Class 10)

Quadratic equations is the 8th Chapter of Mathematics in Class 10. In this chapter, students will learn about quadratic equations and methods to solve them. Quadratic refers to anything that has to do with squares, squaring, terms of the second degree, or equations or formulas that contain such terms.

In algebra, a quadratic equation is an equation which can be rearranged in the standard form as:  ax2 + bx + c = 0

In the above equation, x represents an unknown value, and a, b, and c represent known numbers and a ≠ 0. If a =0 then the equation is said to be linear, not quadratic, as there is no quadratic term. The numbers a, b, and c are the coefficients of the equation and may be distinguished by calling them, respectively, the quadratic coefficient, the linear coefficient and the constant or free term.

FAQs on RD Sharma Class 10 Solutions Chapter 8 - Exercise 8.6

1. What is the difference between linear equations and quadratic equations?

A linear equation produces a straight line when we graph the equation. The linear function can be written in the form of mx+c. There will be one output of y for every input of x. However, when we graph a quadratic equation (y = ax^2 + bx + c), we get a parabola that begins at a single point, called the vertex, and extends upward or downward in the y-direction. A quadratic equation may be defined as the equation having at least one term that is squared whereas linear equations do not have squared values.

2. How can I use quadratic equations in future?

Quadratic equations can be used for calculating areas, determining a product's profit and also in formulating the speed of an object. When two things are multiplied together and both depend on the same variable, quadratic equations are commonly used. When working with area, for example, you can use a quadratic equation if both dimensions are represented in terms of the same variable. Hence, you can use quadratic equations in many ways in the future.
