Van Mahotsava is an annual week-long tree planting festival in India, celebrated during the first week of July. It was started in the year 1950 by Kanaiyalal Maneklal Munshi by planting a tree at Rajghat, Delhi.’Van Mahotsava’ means “festival of forest”. This celebration entails plantation of millions of saplings during the week. Its importance is that it helps tremendously in spreading awareness about the dire consequences of the large scale deforestation. During this week, various schools, organizations, NGOs, other institutions and people on an individual level plant saplings around their offices or houses or parks or schools. It is a week that is meant to celebrate the forests and the trees that grow in it and provide humans with various necessities and how important it is to conserve and treasure them.
