Definition –
Population – The total number of organisms of a species that live together in a particular geographical area and are capable of interbreeding is termed as the population of that particular species in the given area.
The population of a certain type of organisms in a place is influenced by the following factors-
1. Natality or birth rate
2. Mortality or death rate
3. Immigration or entry of new individuals of the same population into a given geographical area.
4. Emigration or exit of existing individuals from the population to a different geographical area.
While all the factors contribute to the population of an area, the most significant ones are natality and mortality. These are considered to be more important than the other two factors because it is not important that immigration and emigration will be prevalent in a population at every time. On the other hand, the population dynamics will surely change due to the addition of new members by birth and due to the removal of existing members due to death.

Note: The effect of emigration is seen when some members of the population of the given geographical area move out of that area and inhabit a new one.
The effect of immigration is seen when some members of the same type enter the given geographical area from outside.
The impact of natality and immigration is an increase in the population and the impact of mortality and emigration is a decrease in the population.
