The Government of Telangana has launched Haritha Haram, a large-scale tree-planting campaign aimed at increasing the state's tree cover from 24% to 33%. Telangana Chief Minister Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao started the initiative on July 3, 2015. It is a Telangana Flagship programme aimed at restoring degraded forests.

The goal of the initiative is to restore degraded forests while also preserving them from dangers like smuggling, encroachment, fire, and grazing. It used a watershed approach to implement rigorous soil and moisture conservation measures.

Massive planting activities were to be undertaken in locations such as roadside avenues, river and canal banks, barren hills and shoreline regions, institutional premises, religious places, housing colonies, community lands, municipalities, and industrial parks, which were all beyond the existing forest.
