Biodiversity, also referred to as biological diversity, the variety of life found in a location on Earth, or the complete variety of life on Earth, sometimes. In addition, biodiversity involves the genetic variety within each species and the variety of habitats produced by species.

One way to determine this "value" or "interest" is to analyse the diversity that occurs in the genera, families, orders, groups, and phyla to which species belong, above the species level. For example, since there are vast numbers of terrestrial insect species, the count of animal species living on land is much higher than the count of those living in the oceans; insects contain several orders and families, and they constitute the largest class of arthropods, which are the largest animal phylum themselves.

A second approach to measure the biodiversity of species is to consider the special biodiversity of ecosystems that contain few, yet rare, species. More broadly, in the ecology of organisms found only there, the areas vary. Endemic species are called species that have relatively limited ranges. The definition of biodiversity also concerns the spectrum of ecological ecosystems that are formed by animals.
