Hint: The United Nations was established on Oct 24, 1945, by 51 countries following the Second World War. Currently, it has a membership of 193 countries. When joining, the member states agree to accept the obligations of the UN charter which came to existence at the end of the San Francisco Conference on June 26, 1945. The UN is headquartered in New York City, USA. There are five principal organs of the United Nations: the General Assembly, the United Nations Security Council, the United Nations Economic and Social Council, the International Court of Justice and the Secretariat.

Complete Step by Step answer: -The Suez Canal Crisis of 1956 arose when sanctioned forces of Israel, Britain and France invaded Egypt intending to regain control of the Suez Canal after it had been nationalised by the Egyptian president, Gamal Abdel Nasser. This resulted in agitations with the Soviet Union as well, who were supplying arms and ammunition to the Egyptian army. It marked the first use of a United Nations peacekeeping force who were sent to supervise the end of hostilities and the withdrawal of the three occupying forces.
-The resolutions of disarmament proposed in U.N. General Assemblies and discussed by the five permanent members of the Security Council eventually led to the 1968 Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
-With the help of the UNESCO, 137 countries have protected over 1000 ancient monuments and historic, cultural and natural sites by making them certified World Heritage Sites.
-The United Nations Environment Program and the World Meteorological Organisation at the Vienna Convention, 1985, provided the framework to create regulatory measures for international reductions in the production of chlorofluorocarbons to preserve the depleting ozone layer. This laid the groundwork for the Montreal Protocol in 1987.
-After a 13-year effort by the World Health Organisation, a specialised agency of the UN, smallpox was declared officially eradicated from the planet in 1980 and has been leading the global response for HIV AIDS, Ebola, Polio, yellow fever and cholera.

Note: The United Nations was formed to correct the issues of its predecessor, League of Nations which had been set up in the aftermath of the First World War but it failed to function effectively enough to prevent the Second World War.
