Hint: In the problem, we are going to write about the definition of data collection. We are also going to discuss different kinds of data collecting procedures and how we segregate the different forms of data. We have also discussed the chief role of collecting data.
Complete step by step answer:
Data collection is a process of gathering and measuring information on different problems and this collection of data enables us to find the relevant answers to the problems. Data collection is something which requires in every sort of field from Social Science, Humanities to Science. The methods of collection and measuring the data are different but the goal of data collection is the same in all the fields to ensure accurate and honest data collection.
There are two kinds of data collection:
First is primary data collection which is the data collection for the first time by an investigator.
It constitutes following types:
(1)Direct Personal Investigation: In this type of investigation, researchers conduct experiments and do the surveys to collect information by themselves so this is the first time contact of data collection by the investigators.
(2)Indirect Oral investigation: This type of investigation is done by a researcher using telephone, taking feedback on social networking sites or even people can hire someone who can give information to them.
(3)Questionnaire method: When data acquiring is done by sending a questionnaire to certain individuals. This can be done by sending a post or an enumerator or you can see while watching youtube that there are different kinds of surveys popping on your screen.
Second way of data collection is a Secondary data collection in which the investigators themselves don’t collect the information rather they use the data from other published or non published sources. The advantage of using this method is that they don’t themselves have to put effort and energy to collect data which will shorten their time to come to a conclusion.
This is how data has been collected.
Note: Now, you might think that how would I know whether the data that we collected is correct or not. Or there might be a case when our integrity of data is lost so to maintain the integrity of our data we will do two approaches:
Quality assurance and quality control
The main focus of quality assurance is prevention which is a cost – effective activity and can be done by standardization of protocol. Hence, that will protect the integrity of data.
Quality control is done during and after the data collection process so the following measures we can do to keep a quality control:
(a) It should be done by monitoring the careful documentation of all the details.
(b)A clearly defined communication structure should be there.
(c)Uncertainty of the flow of information can lead to poorly organized communication structure.
