Her father General Alberto Bachelet was detained and subsequently killed because of his protests against the autocratic military coup of Augusto Pinochet. The Bachelet family also had to bear the torture through unlawful detentions in secret jails under Pinochet. Pinochet’s military dictatorship in the country was very repressive and undemocratic. They killed and tortured anyone who dared to speak against Pinochet’s regime.
She is known as a moderate socialist and rose to power in the elections of 2006 where she secured the Presidency by defeating Chile’s richest and the powerful men.
