Hint :A map is a pictorial representation of an entire area or a part of an area on a flat surface. Man- made features like cities, roads, buildings, railways, etc are very important on a map, therefore, they are shown far larger on a map than their real size.

Complete answer :
Most of the important map signs/symbols are found at the bottom of a map in a map key or legend. Therefore, the part of the map that contains the list of conventional signs and symbols is called ‘legend’.
Conventional symbols are widely accepted signs which signify an idea or concept. They are important for the following reasons because it is much easier and clearer to understand a map with symbols otherwise a map is an useless tool without symbols as they convey the information provided by the map. Legend is most commonly known as the key. Without the legend, the color scheme on the map would make no sense.
Conventional symbols means using different colours, signs and symbols to present any information such as mountains, rivers, peaks, bridges, forts, airports, dams, roads etc on the map. These signs and symbols are used due to the lack of space on a map to show the actual space and shape of such features. There are different elements of a map which play an important role in describing map details. They are title, legend, direction, north arrow, scale and citation.

Option C , is the correct answer.

Note :There are three types of map symbols: Point symbols which are used for buildings, dipping tanks and trigonometrical beacons; Line symbols which are used for railways, roads, power lines and telephone lines; Area symbols which are used for cultivation, orchards and vineyards. There are color codes associated with the map symbols for better understanding.
