Hint: The above given all the compounds are obtained by the polymerization of two or more compounds and the one from the given above which is obtained by the polymerization of chloroprene is strongly resistant to vegetable and mineral oils.
Complete step by step solution:
- First of all , let’s discuss what vegetable and mineral oils. By the vegetable oil, we mean those oils which we obtain from the plant sources like seeds of plants, from the nuts and fruits. They may be saturated, monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats and their chemical formula is generally made up of hydrogen, carbon and oxygen atoms. Example: soybean oil, groundnut oil, peanut boil etc.
- On the other hand, mineral oils are those hydrocarbons which have been derived from the distillation of the crude oil. They are colorless, odorless and are not suitable for human consumption as they are very toxic.
Now, considering the statement;
- Neoprene is a synthetic rubber and is formed by the free radical polymerization of chloroprene and it has strong resistivity to vegetable and mineral oil being a rubber.
Glyptal is a polymer of ethylene glycol and phthalic acid and is not much resistant to vegetable and mineral oils.
- Nitrile rubber is obtained by the polymerization of 1,3 -butadiene and Acro nitrile in the presence of a peroxide catalyst and it is also resistant to vegetable and mineral oils but less than the neoprene.
So, thus, neoprene is the one from the all above given which is highly resistant to vegetable and mineral oils.
Hence, option(a) is correct.
Note: The difference between the vegetable and mineral oils is that;
1.Vegetable are obtained from plants and mineral oil is derived from distillation of crude oil.
2. Vegetable oil can be taken for human consumption while the mineral oils are toxic for human beings.
