The eighth schedule of Indian constitution includes 22 languages as per articles 344 (1) and 351 of the constitution of India. These languages have been adopted as the official languages by most of the states. Although, in addition to Hindi the use of English was continued by the official language act 1963 as an official language, but the 8th schedule of the constitution of India still does not recognize English in the list of official languages. Out of all the 22 languages recognized by the eighth schedule of Indian constitution, 14 languages were already included in the constitution initially. All the other languages were included through different amendment acts of the constitution. By 21st constitutional amendment act in 1967 Sindhi was added to the list. Manipuri, Konkani and Nepali were added by the 71st constitution amendment act of 1992. In the 92nd constitutional amendment act of 2003 Maithili, Dogri, Bodo and Santali were added to the list.
