There are many freshwater lakes in India but the largest freshwater lake is Wular Lake. It is in fact, the largest freshwater lake in Asia. It is located in Bandipora district of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. This lake was formed as a result of tectonic plates activity and is nourished by the Jhelum river.
The Wular Lake was recognized as Wetland of National Importance because of its biological, hydrological and socio-economic values in the year 1986. This was done as a part of the Wetlands Programme of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India for aggressive preservation and conservation purposes.
