Earlier it was called Hajipur but was renamed as Diamond Harbour by The British. It was a resting spot for ships. It also was a stronghold of Portuguese Pirates and there is a ruined fort known as Purano Quila or the Diamond Port Harbour Fort or the Fort of Chingrikhali.
