The malaria epidemic of 1841-42 made the British forces leave their Karnal Cantonment and establishment of the Ambala Army Cantonment. 1843 was the year when the Ambala Army Cantonment was established. One of the three strike corps of the Indian Army is present here and there are a total of 2 corps which are housed in the cantonment.

One of the oldest and largest air bases to be inherited by the Indian Air Force from the British is the Ambala Air Force Base. The airbase houses the ‘7 Wing’ and squadrons of Jaguars and MiG-21 Bisons are present in the base. A unit of Dassault Rafale will also be based at this particular air base.
