Complete answer: Blood is a red coloured body fluid which acts as a transport medium for various materials. It is a composition of RBC, WBC, platelets, plasma, proteins, ions, hormones, carbon dioxide (excretory product) and oxygen. Blood is bright red coloured due to the presence of haemoglobin which is made up of four protein chains; two alpha and two beta and attached with an iron element. Blood is oxygenated when oxygen is bound with haemoglobin and deoxygenated when it binds with carbon dioxide. WBC is in the blood is nucleated, all types of WBCs possess a nucleus and the nucleus may be multilobed or bilobed, but in the case of RBC, which is also called erythrocytes are non-nucleated, i.e. the nucleus is absent. The cytoplasm of RBCs is rich in haemoglobin, which binds with oxygen, which is the most important part and plays a role in the transportation of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the body tissue. The mature red blood cells are flexible, oval, biconcave disk-like structures. Due to the absence of a nucleus in RBC, it successfully binds and holds a maximum of four oxygen molecules and makes efficient transportation of oxygen in the body. Because nucleus presence takes lots of space in the cell.
Note: Along with humans, all mammals' red blood cells lack nucleus in it except camel, camel’s red blood cells possess nucleus in it. Disruption or improper formation of RBCs can be caused by various kinds of factors like heavy metal accumulation or genetic drift like sickle cell anaemia.
