The International Labour Organisation was created in 1919 as an agency of the League of Nations under the Treaty of Versailles after the First World War. The Constitution of the ILO was drafted by the Labour Commission in 1919 and the organisation strived to establish universal peace based on social justice. Some of its goals were to improve regulation of working time and conditions, preventing unemployment, seeking to provide an adequate living wage, guaranteeing equal pay for equal work and ensuring social protection of workers, children, young persons and women. The ILO played a major role in combating the widespread unemployment caused during the Great Depression. Although the League of Nations was dissolved and replaced by the United Nations in 1946, the ILO was the only functioning organisation that was carried forward and it became the first affiliated agency of the United Nations.
