Geological isolation is a term which refers to a population of animals, plants or other organisms separated from the genetic material exchanged with other organisms of the same species. Geographic isolation is usually the result of an error or coincidence. Geographic isolation can be induced by multiple variables which can lead to a range of consequences.

(I) Isolation through Barriers: Owing to the absence of genetic material from other ethnicities and races, the inhabitants of Finland, who are secluded to some extent from the rest of the world by water, develop some diseases. Physical barriers preclude fish from mating with fish from another stream from one stream, resulting in a less diverse gene pool between such fish. The fish become unwilling to mate successfully with other groups as time progresses.

(II) Isolation through Distance: Cheetahs were isolated from each other by a larger groupmate, resulting in a less diverse pool of genes. When a flock becomes isolated from the rest of an island, genetic exchange between finches is prevented. Eventually, as an entirely independent species, the isolated group emerges. Because of physical segregation, a population of genetically distinct chimpanzees were unable to mate with all other chimpanzees in their population, resulting in the creation of certain viruses that would have prevented genetic material from the other chimpanzees.
