Collodion is a syrupy solution which contains nitrocellulose along with a mixture of ether and alcohol. It is differentiated into two types- Flexible collodion and Non-flexible Collodion. Flexible collodion is used in surgical dressings .It is a yellowish viscous solution which is used to seal wounds. Non-flexible collodion is used in makeup. It is used for creating special effects especially for creating scars on skin. It is applied on a small patch of the skin and then left to dry. It results in creation of wrinkles on skin which then helps in creating the real look of scars.
Rigid collodion solution can result in the creation of real scars, so one needs to remove the collodion solution properly from skin to avoid any real image. It should not be kept applied for long periods on the faces of actors. It can produce toxic results on combustion as release of carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide and oxides of nitrogen may take place which can cause serious health hazards.
