Major H.P.S. Ahluwalia, along with his two sisters and younger brother, was born and raised in Shimla. His father worked for the Central Public Works Department as a Civil Engineer. He attended St. Joseph's Academy and St. George's College in Mussoorie for his education. He acquired his passion for photography and rock climbing there.

Major Hari Pal Singh Ahluwalia is a retired Indian Army officer, mountaineer, author, and social worker from India. He has made contributions in the domains of adventure, sports, the environment, disabilities, and social work throughout his career. He is the sixth Indian to climb Mount Everest and the twenty-first man in the world to do it.

Phu Dorjee Sherpa Ahluwalia made the fourth and final summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 12 years to the day after the first climb with H. C. S. Rawat. This was the first time three climbers were able to stand on the summit at the same time.

Major Hari Pal Singh Ahluwalia, 75, is the chairman and founder of the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre (ISIC) in New Delhi's Vasant Kunj. Despite the fact that he is in a wheelchair, he has built a world-class health institute despite having no administrative expertise.
