Korotkoff sounds are the sounds which are heard by the doctor or by the medical personnel during the examination of blood pressure by a non–invasive procedure. When blood pressure cuffs change the direction of flow of blood through the artery of the heart then these korotkoff sounds are generated.
Korotkoff sounds have five distinct phases and they are:
In the first phase (phase 1) a sound (sharp tapping) is generated when the pressure cuffs are released
In the second phase (phase 2) a whooshing sound is generated when the blood flows through the blood vessel due to deflated cuff.
In the third phase (phase 3) a thump sound is generated when the blood flows through the artery of the heart in this phase the pressure cuff is deflated.
In the fourth phase (phase 4) a softer , blowing sound is generated.
In the fifth phase (phase 5) completely sound is generated as the pressure cuffs are released and the blood flows normally.
